When I set out to do this project I figured I would find out how much has changed in regards to student free time. While I did find many changes what I also found was that currents students are no so different from there alumni predecessors. For starters the majority of both the alumni and current students surveyed have either part-time or full-time jobs. When surveying Arkansas State alumni over 51.72% said to have worked more than 12 hours a week and 20.69% worked nearly full time, only 28% said they either worked less than 6 hours a week or did not work at all. When it came to current students surveyed 61 percent either work more than 12 hours a week or full time.
Alumni
Current Students
With the combination of school and work for both Alumni and Current students it is easy to see what both groups cited sleep as a common activity during there free time. In terms of Alumni 15% said they used there free time to catch up on sleep and 27% of current students said they slept or napped in there free time. While they may seem like a boring discovery it is worth noting that neither the alumni nor current students listed any spectacular or mind blowing activities they do in there free time, they both have a normal college life. A lot of the alumni and current students said they just simply chose to hang out with friends, family, or just decided to stay home or in there apartment to relax and wind down or catch up on house hold chores. There is one place, however, that links both the alumni and current students, Craighead Forrest Park.
Nearly a quarter of both the alumni and current students surveyed listed Craighead Forrest has a place they frequented. Any one who has ever been to Craighead knows there is a plethora of things to do such as hiking, fishing, playgrounds, and feeding the wildlife. I believe that Craighead can serve has microcosm to explain the similarities between the alumni and current students. For starters its free to go there, its a common stereotype that by in large college kids are perpetually broke so any free entertainment they will gravitate towards. Another possibility is that both chose to got to Craighead to relax from the stress of work and college.A Tale of Two Malls
Both the alumni and the current students listed the Mall has a location they like to visit however they are speaking of two different mall. The Mall that the alumni were referring to is the Indian Mall which opened in 1968 and closed in 2008. The mall that the current students are referring to is The Turtle Creek Mall which opened in 2006. Like with Craighead park this a good example out with links past and current students. While the malls were different the principle was the same, a place to go in your free time with your friends to relax and buy stuff you probably do not need. The malls are a good metaphor for The more things change, the more they stay the same. Despite the fact that the alumni and current students went to Arkansas State or lived in Jonesboro decades apart, a simple fact remain, they are were just college kids. The places may change, bars and clubs may come and go, but at the end of the day, out of all those surveyed, they are not so different from one another.
