Changing Landscapes: From "The ASU Story" to Modern A-State

Jumpin' Joe

The “face” of Arkansas State College’s Indians was created by Dr. Gary Dehls, a junior from Piggott at ASU in 1951, whose “Indian Joe” or “Jumpin’ Joe” icon was originally a comic election advertisement for the candidates of the Independent Student Association, according to an interview published in the Clay County Times-Democrat by Ryan Rogers (Wednesday, March 26, 2008). The popularity of the image led to its adoption as the mascot for the football team, and the brand image for Arkansas State team loyalty for fifty years.
