Satirical Propaganda
The signs are roughly identical, each containing some slogan and a central artwork of the Mayor's angry, beet-red face. Despite the seeming innocence of these posters (The format, after all, is a cartoon), Živadinović creates a much darker perspective on political oppression.
The largest feature of these posters are their usage of simplistic message with bold imagery. This is quite reminiscent of Cold War era Soviet propoganda, which became famous for this specific style. Using allusion to totalitarian posters, Živadinović is intentionally drawing a comparison between the town of Hamelin and gubernatorial constructs that we, as Americans, ideologically oppose.
The introduction of Chuck Krispin as the face of Hamelin's television media further expands the political connection. Krispin is represented in a style similar to former FOX News host Bill O'Reilly, and makes constant derogatory comments towards the liberal side of politics. Using the image of Krispin, as well as the readers' negative reactions to his news show, Živadinović is able to juxtapose Hamelin and extreme right politics. This completes his goal of connecting the fringe of American Conservatism to totalitarianism, displaying a rather ugly view of where the future of American politics could lead.
