Thanks for your patience during our recent outage at scalar.usc.edu. While Scalar content is loading normally now, saving is still slow, and Scalar's 'additional metadata' features have been disabled, which may interfere with features like timelines and maps that depend on metadata. This also means that saving a page or media item will remove its additional metadata. If this occurs, you can use the 'All versions' link at the bottom of the page to restore the earlier version. We are continuing to troubleshoot, and will provide further updates as needed. Note that this only affects Scalar projects at scalar.usc.edu, and not those hosted elsewhere.

Biography: Rev. Daniel J. Murphy, originally from Sligo in Ireland, was an Irish speaker and traditional music enthusiast. While in the Philadelphia area in the early 1900s, he collected roughly 1200 sean-nós songs in Irish in the Philadelphia and anthracite regions of Pennsylvania with his collaborator J. J. Lyon of Galway, Ireland. His archives are housed in the National University of Ireland, Galway and are as of this writing uncatalogued. Dr. Deirdre Ní Chonghaile has published on the subject in the article “‘Sagart gan iomrádh’: An tAthair Domhnall Ó Morchadha (1858-1935) agus amhráin Philadelphia” in Litríocht na Gaeilge ar fud an Domhain, eds Máirín Nic Eoin, Ríona Nic Congáil, Pádraig Ó Liatháin, Meidhbhín Ní Úrdail, & Regina Uí Chollatáin, 191-214. Baile Átha Cliath: LeabhairComhar, 2015. Dr. Ní Chonghaile's research on Murphy is ongoing.
Provenance: Thanks to Emmett Gill of Na Píobairí Uilleann, who writes "I bought Irish Minstrels & Musicians from a US based book dealer about 10 years ago, I can't find the details."
