A tribute to Dr. Desiree L. DePriest

We are celebrating the life of Desiree L. DePriest, Ph.D., who recently passed away on June 1, 2022, following a near-decade long fight with neuroendocrine cancer.
She was a personal friend of mine whom I met when I hired her virtually in 2004 as an adjunct faculty when we lived states apart at that time. Over the last 18 years we have stayed fast-friends and through an amazing twist of geographic fate, she was a vital reference for me when an opportunity came for me to apply for a job here in Kansas City in 2010 where she was from. She knew the hiring manager here and I’m certain her professional endorsement ‘tipped the scales’ and landed me the position in KC!
After moving to Kansas City, I got the marvelous opportunity to visit face-to-face with her almost every year at the SIDLIT conferences at JCCC. This was always one of my highlights at the event: getting a chance go to one of her presentations (or vice versa) and to have lunch at the conference and to catch-up with her amazing life and professional adventures. She would often bring her two children to SIDLIT (twins Danielle Therese and David Swan when they were younger) to help with media during her many SIDLIT presentations and two nicer kids you will never meet.
She was also a contributor to our C2C Digital Magazine as her knowledge and talents in the arts and educational technology were deep. She started publishing with the magazine in 2016 and contributed through 2022. For more on a list of her articles, see this page.
Desiree and I were often online email support buddies and spiritual encouragers to each other – when she struggled I had the opportunity to tell her to ‘stay in the fight’ (which she always did) and she always was quick to offer to help in any way.
Her faith as a Christian was always a beacon of Hope which never wavered - she is now with her Maker and Savior who has called her to her final home. In the meantime, she will be greatly missed here by the many she has enlightened: her students, the educational community and her family and friends. It is a with great honor that I consider myself in the latter group.
