Letter from the Chair: Dennis Peirce
Greetings, Colleagues!
I am the I.T. Systems Coordinator at West-Central Independent Living Solutions (WILS), a Center for Independent Living in Warrensburg, MO, where I provide training for our staff, consumers, and attendants. I have been involved with C2C since 2015 when I was a Systems Coordinator for the University of Central Missouri. I’d like to introduce this year’s leadership team: Cheryl Zelle (Kansas State University & Baker University) serves as vice chair; Ed Lovitt (Johnson County Community College) returns as treasurer; and Lisa Shappee returns as secretary. Together with the steering committee, we have been laying the foundation for forthcoming professional development (PD) events which will culminate in the Summer Institute for Distance Learning and Instructional Technology (SIDLIT) on July 27-29, 2022 (Wed. - Fri.).
I first attended SIDLIT in 2015 because one of my colleagues at the University of Central Missouri attended previously and highly recommended it. I learned so much that I couldn’t wait to register the next year. In 2017, I was honored to present for my first time on ThingLink. Fast forward to 2019 at Fort Hays State University when I was sitting with my undergraduate mentor and her daughter who was serving as the C2C secretary. Both encouraged me to volunteer for the C2C Steering Committee. It sure has been a wild ride since then from implementing Sched to organize our presentation schedules for our first ever virtual conference to now having the honor and privilege to shape #SIDLIT2022 with a fitting theme and engaging keynote speakers.
This year’s SIDLIT will be offered virtually once again with the theme "Empowering Learners through Personal Connections." Since the COVID-19 pandemic began, remote learning has come to the forefront. Even though the pandemic has subsided somewhat, the capability of remote learning and remote work has caused many to rethink how these technologies have affected our lives, for better and/or worse. For all of the conveniences they provide, it’s imperative that learners make a personal connection with their instructors to make learning meaningful. We encourage you to be on the lookout for the Call for Proposals early next year so you can share your experiences so others may learn.
