Missing people: “I hate not seeing my friends”
(About the effect of SARS-CoV-2 / COVID-19 on life:) It has not had a major effect on my professional career; however, I do miss interacting in person with my colleagues.
(About handling the uncertainty of SARS-CoV-2 / COVID-19:) I just try to always wear a mask and to stay away from large group gatherings (more than 4 people). The only thing I do is go grocery shopping and I always wear a mask and gloves.
(About managing stress:) Exercise
(About effects on work life:) My work life has not been affected because I pretty much met with all my candidates via Zoom. It has changed my ability to interact in person with
colleagues. The part I hate the most is the postponement of commencement exercises.
Yes, I have a home office; however it is in a small guest bedroom. I have most of the things I need from my office.
(About new approaches to online teaching and learning:) I had used Zoom previously due to bad weather, so it was easy to adapt. I use Zoom breakout rooms. My classes are not the conventional courses.
(About video conferencing and Zoom impacting life and work:) Thank God for Zoom. I started using it regularly about 4 years ago. It is a wonderful. I could not do my job without it.
(About supporting advisees:) I force my advisees to meet with me via Zoom at least monthly, but is many cases, weekly. Candidates can text and email me any time.
(About engaging colleagues during these times:) Usually, via email or Zoom.
(Any new and helpful technologies?) Not really.
(Any “superpowers” to help with coping?) No superpowers here.
(About the “new normal”:) I expect more online learning.
(What will be remembered from this time in the future:) Not sure. I hate not seeing my friends.
(About preparing for a future pandemic:) Would not do anything differently.
