Black Arts at Oxy

Letter to Marie Johnson Calloway

Dear Mrs. Johnson Calloway,

My name is Emily Dwyer. I am a student at Occidental College in Los Angeles, California studying Modern and Contemporary Art with Professor Amy Lyford. Myself and two other students, Kailee Stovall and Jenn Keane, are currently conducting research on the Black Art Exhibition that was displayed at Occidental College in 1971. We are specifically researching you and your works “Window,” “Woman with Flowers” and “Painted Construction.” As a part of our research, we are hoping to locate high-quality images of these three works that were included in the Occidental exhibition. It has been a privilege to study your contribution to the landscape of African American art. I am from San Francisco, and will be back in the Bay Area during our school break from November 19th to November 27th. Kailee and Jenn are also planning on visiting the Bay Area during this time. We would be honored to meet with you at your convenience, to discuss your artistic process and creative development. Thank you for your influence. We hope to hear from you soon!

Sincerely,

Emily, Kailee, and Jenn
