Avis and Levin


A closer look at Malamud's editing process:
 

It changes nothing, he desperately thought frantically. At the same time he felt knew it changed all everything, even the past.

The photograph How—Oh hHadn’t you heard of it?” She was embarrassed . "I imagined you was surely knew Dr. Fabrikant had told you.” 

What did you imagine? No." 

She hesitated, then quickly said, I thought someone surely told you of the picture Howard Gerald took of photograph of them on the beach one day at the coast. It’s ancient history now, so there’s nothing wrong in telling you that tThey were both naked as the livelong day. This was on the beach at the coast.I assumed you knew, or I—I wouldn't— 

Contextual note:

The above exchange between Avis (Lily in the manuscript) and Levin follows Levin’s abrupt split from Pauline as he wanders near her house, hoping for a glimpse of her. Denied such a glimpse, he has an exchange with Avis wherein he learns not only of the affair between Pauline and Duffy, but also of Gilley’s photographic evidence. This has the effect of further alienating Levin from Pauline in both drafts. A significant addition on Malamud’s part is Levin’s realization that this new information creates a retroactive impact in his view of Pauline as well as his own affair with her. In both drafts, Levin’s knowledge of Gilley’s photograph of Duffy and Pauline significantly alters Levin’s view of Gilley.
