Season of 1940

For the fourth time in five years with the Yankees, Joe missed the opening game because of injury.  He hurt his right knee sliding into second base while playing the Dodgers at Ebbet's Field.  He was able to join the lineup again on May 1st.

The Yankees were having a difficult year.  They lost the pennant to Detroit and ended the season in third place.  This was the first time that a team under the management of Joe McCarthy had finished lower than second place.  Joe drove back to San Francisco in his car and listened to the World Series on the radio.

There were a few silver linings for Joe in the 1940 season.  He won the American League batting championship for the second time in a row.  He was in close competition with Luke Appling of the White Sox.  There was also a "Joe DiMaggio Day" in Yankee Stadium, where he received the American League's Most Valuable Player Award from the Sporting News and Publishing Company.
