I am inclined to make a (perhaps too generous) argument here about Cymbeline’s singular disparagement of female craftiness due to Shakespeare’s interest in how women’s cleverness can be a function of their virtue, as in the shining example of Imogen, but such a line of inquiry is beyond the scope of this paper.
