ASPA Final

Post 2

When watching the film Infernal Affairs, I was shocked by the multiple plot twists within the film. The theme of identity was the driving force for the film’s unique storyline. For me, the scene when Tony Leung first meets Inspector Lau and they talk about the speakers that Inspector Lau purchased was the scene that had me in shock. In the beginning of the film, Inspector Lau goes to a music store, where he purchased the speakers. The dialogue exchanged from the beginning scene, to the later scene is almost identical. I feel that the theme of identity was very evident in these two scenes. Inspector Lau is able to take the persona of both a customer at a music store, and a mole within the police force. The ironic part of these two scenes was that the character took on two different identities, while talking about the same topic, in different moments within the movie. Shortly after, their exchange, Tony recognizes a folder he signed that he had given to Hon, on Inspector Lau’s desks. From this observation, Tony realizes that Inspector Lau is the mole within the Police Force. Shortly before, he was congratulating Lau for killing Hon, only to realize that he was congratulating the antagonist. From this, we see how significant one’s identity can really be. I also thought that Tony’s quote to Lau on the rooftop was very powerful. Tony has Lau at gunpoint and says, “Unlike you, I’m not afraid of light”. This proves that Unlike Lau, Tony is a mole for the right reasons and has nothing to hide. In conclusion, Infernal Affairs is a great watch, with many plot twists that keeps the audience guessing. After watching this I learned that one can run but they can’t hide.
