Themes of love, and deviation are present throughout the movie. Master Li and Shu Lien are two Kung Fu masters who share feelings for one another. They never outwardly express their feelings but there is an unspoken love for one another. It isn’t until the end when Master Li is struck with a poison dart, that they admit their feelings for one another. When Master Li tells Shu Lien that he will be giving the Green sword of destiny to Sir Te, symbolism is used as Master Li is giving up his whole life’s work to be with the woman he loves. He is willing to leave his old life behind and start a future with Shu Lien. Shu Lien on the other hand, feels it is her job to protect the sword and not let emotions of love interfere in her work. Because of this she tries to suppress her feelings but ultimately loses the one she loves the most. Jen Yu is another character who struggles with the norms of society and finds herself deviating from expectations. Soon to be married, Jen tries to rebel against her family tradition. She longs to be free from the shackles of the societal norm and instead pursues Kung Fu. Secretly she works with the Jade Fox in trying to steal the sword. Shu Lien and Master Li are the only two characters who know of her hidden skills. Mid way through the film, Jen gets lost in the desert and meets Lo, a horseman who’s the leader of the dark cloud. The two of them fall in love, however Jen returns to see her family. Months later, Lo visits Jen, and tells her to leave with him. Eventually, Jen flees from her family and finds Lo, but decides to jump off a sacred mountain hoping for happiness. Throughout the film, the main characters struggle with love and their duties within society. Ultimately, they sacrifice their lives for the people they love the most.
