KPop, Masculinity, and the Global Market

KPop, Masculinity, and the Global Market

From the West to the East, the world and it’s different cultures have very distinct forms and views of masculinity. In America, masculinity is often described through grit, nonchalant demeanors, and toughness, however, through the multiple visuals found on Korean pop culture, it is apparent that masculinity is far different. The media presented on the Korean Wave, or Hallyu, was largely composed of images involving Korean Pop or KPop artists and music, and through those visuals, it is easy to find that the view of masculinity is nowhere near the “Western” form. Where Western masculinity focuses on the ruggedness and toughness of men, which includes focusing on muscles and facial in American cinema, the groups that we've view, such as BTS in the Burn The Stage YouTube series, the group memebers can be seen wearing makeup, earrings, and fit the “pretty boy” persona, which contrasts greatly with the American “rough and tumble” trope. BTS, while certainly the largest, international Korean music group, do not fully represent the entire Korean music industry. Individuals such as PSY, who catapulted to international fame after the creation if Gangam Style in 2012., have adopted very “Westernized” forms of masculinity and personality. From his playful vulgarity, to his use of sexualized women in each of his music videos, to his portrayal as a drinking, smoking, sly, joker, PSY's attitude, as well as his music, which infuses large amounts of techno/EDM styles, connect him closer to Western ideas of masculinity and music style, which is a large reason for his initial success. In conclusion, while both PSY and BTS are large representatives of Korean Pop music in the past decade, even within the circle of “Korean entertainers” they're representation of masculinity varies greatly, much like the way masculinity varies across the globe, however, through this, the large acceptance of BTS on a world stage solidifies the idea that there is no dominant or “true” form of masculinity, and it us possibly the definition of masculinity will begin to shift around the world in a short time.
