Group Facilitation Summary

Throughout the course of the class, a large portion of time was dedicated to Chinse Kung Fu films, with our first film of the type being Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon. I found myself becoming very engaged with Jen, the aristocrat’s daughter turned Kung Fu master, and so, in my group facilitation, I centered my question around her based on public opinion. This was my question:
“What were your reactions/feelings towards Jen and her actions throughout the movie? Did you find her to be the main antagonist of the story, the protagonist, or maybe a bit of both?”

My question received a lot of mixed answers from the class, with some of my peers finding Jen to be an antagonist throughout the movie, mostly based on her involvement with the Jade Fox, which ultimately lead to the death of the main male protagonist, Master Li Mu Bai. There were some, however, some opinions saw Jen as a confused protagonist, almost, blaming her corruption by Jade Fox on her evil actions throughout the film. Both of these reactions were expected due to the ever-changing and rebellious nature of Jen throughout the film, and while a historical context connection was not made  at the time, her actions against the aristocracy and her family were considered extremely shocking in China’s cultural context due to China during its time of depiction in the film, was heavily male-dominated, and Jen’s character acted as a force against that continually perpetuated expectation.
