One of the most recognizable and highly regarded is the char bagh gardens those found at the Taj Mahal in Agra, India (Azmee, Nurshamiela, Mohd Yazid Mohd Yunos, Md Azree Othuman Mydin, Sumarni Ismail, Noor Fazamimah Mohd Ariffin, Nor Kalsum Mohd Isa, and Zainab Abdul Latiff 2016). The Islamic garden at the Taj Mahal comprises of 300 square meters of space and is located in the complex between the Tomb and Gateway. It is divided up into 4 quarters which are broken down into 16 flowerbeds with a raised marble water tank at the center and a reflecting pool running along the north-south axis (Azmee, Nurshamiela, Mohd Yazid Mohd Yunos, Md Azree Othuman Mydin, Sumarni Ismail, Noor Fazamimah Mohd Ariffin, Nor Kalsum Mohd Isa, and Zainab Abdul Latiff 2016, 166). It very closely follows the design guidelines outlined in the Quran making it an excellent example of the ideal traditional Islamic garden. They are a prime demonstration of the inspiration for the courtyard at the Delegation. Maki altered elements to better suit the needs and restrictions of the Ottawa structure but is clear to those experiencing the Delegation's courtyard how he kept the spirit of a space for reflection alive.
The Ottawa delegation is one of many buildings serving His Highness the Aga Khan. The Ismaili Centre in Lisbon, Portugal is home to another wonderful char bagh. Unlike with the Delegation in Ottawa, it is a more traditional interpretation. The garden in Lisbon was able to include the water feature, meeting the standard of char baghs with a fountain at its center rather than the improvised water features at the Ottawa Delegation.
