Origins

Before the museum took shape there was lots to discuss surrounding the creation. This discussion made the opening seem doubtful, the proposed museum faced criticism from many. In light of what Parkin had proposed, a certain consultant, Shephard, noted that “in light of the Ontario government’s decision to build a ‘splendidly first-class’ science museum in Toronto, it would be unwise for the federal government to invest in a competing institution” (Babaian, 13). Following more conversation questioning the museum, as Babaian writes: “the new Secretary of State of Canada, the Honourable Judy LaMarsh, announced the cancellation of the new museum building project” (Babian, 15). This was hurtful to the museums success, however, the aspirations for the museum were reignited: “The government, for its part, tried to demonstrate its continuing commitment by introducing legislation – what would become the National Museums Act – in May 1967 to reorganize and reinvigorate the institution” (Babaian, 15). Thus, the Canada Science and Technology Museum, born during turmoil, has to get up and running in a vigorous fashion. This accelerated process will cause issues for the museum regarding sound, however, the museum uses very interactive exhibits. As was the style of the museum’s new director, Dr. Baird.
