The Reading Room

If the frontal area shows the rigid side of the building, the non-public area shows the designer’s consideration of justices and staff. More than half of the space is restricted to the public, which the office area at the back of the building. Different than the public area, the back area shows more humanistic care.

The main reading room of the Court’s Library is on the third floor of the building, directly above the Grand Entrance Hall. The main reading room of the library inherited the coffered ceiling with indirect light from the grand hall, but it designed to use wood as the primary material. Different than the solemn feeling from the grand hall created by cold marbles, the architect uses wood with the yellow light which creates a comfortable warm space for people to read.

Judge’s reading room is designed to create a comfort and even homy feeling, it can be seen as a study in a personal household. The coffered ceiling and wooden bookshelf are continued into this space and the single pendant light helps to separate the room to different zones according to different functions. The reading room provides a space for judges’ informally meeting or chatting. It garnishes with flowers creates a homelike and allowed the judges to relax a little bit after the trails.
