Leszczynski - Late Minoan Creature Covered Gems

Introduction
A collection of  Lentoid gems engraved by Minoan craftsman.  All of the objects in the collection were created within the Minoan Culture.   All of the artist who engraved the gems are unfortunately unknown.    This collection spans the Late Minoan I-II period to the Late Minoan II-IIIA period or the years 1600 BCE - 1300BCE.     Some served a useful purpose as seals.  Lentoid is used to describe them simply becuase of their Lens-like shape.  Material used by the Minoan craftsmen in this collection are Jasper, Agate Carnelian or Marble.  These objects were all borrowed from The Met and are all classified as gems.  Minoan craftsmen engraved their lentoid Gems with everything animals, plants, human figurines, mythical creatures, action scenes and anything else their creative mind could come up with.  In this collection our gems are adorned with animals and one mythical creature.

Marble Lentoid
The Octopus was carved into the marble by a Minoan craftsman sometime between 1450-1375 B.C.  The head is center top.  Three tentacles can be seen on either side protruding from the head.  It was left to The Met by Richard Berry Seager in 1926.  It is considered a lentoid because of the round, lens-like shape.
