According to their position on the page the four margins are known as the inner or gutter, head or top, fore-edge or outer, and tail or foot. By limiting eye movement to the ends of a line margins are thought to aid legibility, and by combining to create an optically satisfying balance between blank and printed areas they set off the latter much as a picture is set off by its mount."
