A Snapshot of You: Writing a Cultural Vignette

Lessons from a Pro: Sandra Cisneros & The House on Mango Street

Sandra Cisneros is one of the best known authors of vignettes from her 1984 novel,
The House on Mango Street.

Listen to at least three of Cisneros' stories through the audio tools on the external page. In a separate document, summarize your experience with the stories. You can talk about the stories themselves, what you liked or disliked about listening to the stories read and why, or anything that surprised you about the short stories. Is Sandra Cisneros successful in telling her stories in such short amounts of time? What did you feel is the most powerful in the vignettes? Do you feel anything is lacking? What does the vignette as a genre allow the author to do with his or her story?

Be prepared to share and submit your summaries in class to help contribute to our communal classroom understanding of the power of vignettes!

Comment one of your most important points from each of your three Cisneros' summaries below to help your classmates get thinking about vignettes.
