The J/88 was equipped with single-engine hunters, which were used both in the air-to-air role in the air surveillance operation or to escort transport planes or bombers as well as in the air-to-ground role for close air support of their own ground forces. The nominal squadron strength was twelve fighters each. This unit J/88 comprised between three and four squadrons flying first He 51Bs, then Messerschmitt Bf109s of types B,C,D,and E. It also tested the He 112 and the Ar 68 night fighter under service conditions [1].
