Digital History Seminar: 20th Century Spain

C.N.T.

The C.N.T. is and was an anarcho-syndicalist trade union in Spain. The main goal of the union was to overthrow capitalism by general strikes, but after the Francisco revolution in 1936 their aims began to change. The C.N.T. already had ultra-radical groups within its ranks, like the Solidarios, led by Bueunaventura Durruti, who would play a large role in the upcoming war and the May Days of 1937, but until the outbreak of war were primarily pacifist. The C.N.T. was aligned with the Republican government of Spain and was highly influential in Catalonia especially. After the outbreak of hostilities they aligned or re-aligned themselves with several other groups including the P.O.U.M., but also the F.A.I, and the U.G.T.
