Wired Magazine Rosie the Riveter
Limor Fried holds a drill, flexing her arm, on the cover of Wired Magazine in 2011. Electricity is coming out of her drill. She wears a blue work outfit, and goggles on her forehead. The cover story is “How to Make Stuff.” Fried is the first female engineer to appear on the cover of Wired Magazine, so it is empowering to other women to have her on the cover of Wired Magazine, and to view her as a role model. Rosie the Riveter is being used to represent how women can work in a typically male-dominated field.
However, Limor Fried is being highlighted for being a woman, which could overshadow her success as an engineer. Rosie the Riveter could be disempowering here, because it frames Fried as a woman, and rather allowing her to be acknowledged as a male engineer would be--by focusing on her actual accomplishments as an engineer.
