Scripps Magazine Rosie the Riveter
The cover of this Scripps College Magazine has a blond Rosie the Riveter on the cover. She wears a classic green work shirt, with “Scripps” embroidered on the right shoulder. She is posing with her right arm raised, showing a tattoo that says “Confidence, Courage, & Hope.” She wears heavy eye shadow, blush, and lipstick. She also has a pink-spotted bandana on.
Scripps College used the image of Rosie the Riveter to promote the college's image of having empowered female students, and to continue to empower prospective students. According to the editor, Mary Shipp Bartlett, the image on the cover is meant to represent "one empowered woman rather than everywoman" and to capture "the feeling of empowerment and positive action so prevalent in our Scripps students and alumnae" (Cover page, Scripps Magazine, Spring 2011: Vol. 82, No. 2.). Bartlett also writes: "You probably won't find a student--or alumna--looking exactly like our "Rosie." The Scripps Rosie is tough, but not hardened; ready to take on the world on her own terms, yet willing to be part of a team" (Cover page, Scripps Magazine, Spring 2011: Vol. 82, No. 2.).
