Intro/context
This note from Grace Ferrier Tooby was at the very top of the folder containing letters from a group of 8 Scripps alumnae. Most of the letters are to Scripps College President Chandler trying to convince him that the Humanities Program had changed too much since they had been at Scripps and needed to be fixed. The letters were written over a 3 year period most in 1979, and 1980 with the earliest from 1978.
This note is the only context we have for this archive. It lets us know that what we have are copies, and also hints at what the collection is missing. Where are the awkwardly received and conciliatory responses from Scripps President Chandler? I've tried to supplement his voice by bringing in some of his thoughts on the humanities program.
