Phoenix to Chandler letter

This letter was written in 1979 to Scripps College President John H. Chandler, and signed by 8 Scripps alumnae. Enclosed with it were personal letters from each alum concerning the changes in the Humanities program. A couple of news articles sited by the letters as well as a letter from Virginia Waldo Steele to Grace Ferrier Tooby were included. That letter gives insight into how the alumnae were brought together and the Phoenix Movement formed.

The first page mentions forwarding these letters to the faculty, however, we do not know if the faculty ever received them, or if they sent back any responses. We do know that the faculty voted for chronology in the humanities program in the joint letter, which could mean that they received these letters and were influenced by them.
