Grace Ferrier Tooby to John
This letter was written in 1979 by Grace Ferrier Tooby. She is the only one who calls President Chandler by his first name. Her letter stresses the importance of chronology in the humanities program. She describes her Scripps Humanities program as unique because "it sought the thread of coherence in civilizations"(pg 1).
When Grace was a Scripps student the purpose of the program was to “form an introduction to the development and character of Occidental civilization from ancient to modern times, and are so designed as to unify the student’s understanding, familiarize her with the fundamental problems of each period of human culture which has entered into the making of our won lives, is the fundamental affair of the Scripps courses in the Humanities”(taken from 1938 Scripps bulletin).
For her the "excitement of the Humanities lies in the search for coherence" and being able to trace our culture from whence it came like with her example that "our civil rights came from English civil liberties which came from Protestant dissent" (pg 2).
"Chronology is not a goal. It is simply a framework, a means to an end which is knowledge"(pg 3). She references Max Delbruck before this quote. She emphasizes time, which is like an arrow, it can only move forward.
