Brian Kim Stefans's project Star Wars, One Letter at a Time makes use of Flash media, consisting of audio and text, to give readers a simulation-like experience in which we take the place of George Lucas as he creates Star Wars, Episode IV. However, there is no opportunity to interact with this e-lit; we can only watch and listen as the entire script of A New Hope flashes, one letter at a time, in the middle of the screen. The performative nature of the project asks the reader to reflect on the ephemerality of the text. It also asks readers to consider how we make meaning and how we call upon memory when encountering new information. The appropriation of the Star Wars script raises questions of whether or not the ideas of the creator are substantive enough to transform found text into a creative project. At what point does documentation become creative transformation?
