Henry Rosenblatt: Mojave

Mohave* -  Mojave
From Pasifik no. 1 (March 1929): 3-4.
Translated by Hershl Hartman.

Mojave!
Why have you focused your thirst-burned lips upon the heavens? —
Clouds are advancing upon the world!
The clouds carry full rivers and the rivers — fresh chill.
Mojave, fresh chill!

It’s raining in the lonely Sierra hills, Mojave.
The rain falls like blue rice on white heads.
D’you hear how water-streams roar through the stony ribs of the mountains?
A river — a foaming greenish-white drawn veil,
dispersed, spreads over the spine of the darkened vale.
D’you hear, Mojave? — —
A whisper of a far-off echo-call:
It’s raining in the hills!
It’s raining in the hills!

Mojave, listen!
The bluebird** cry out to the wind.
The fir trees sing under the rain-gush.
The lonely coyotes howl like dogs in love:
It’s raining in the hills, Mojave,
It’s raining in the hills!

And you, Mojave, snuggle, press in vain
the thorny cactuses to your grey, sucked-out breasts;
you rock uselessly, Mojave, your used-up Yehoshua-trees*** in your lap;
they deepen the sleep that pours out over all the verges of death…

So hear, Mojave, hear,
as all your blackbirds — hungry rats — sob under your petrified skin;
they sob, your blackbirds, in muted cries as they weepingly die out.

Mojave, d’you see?!
Around the bright head of Mount Whitney
a white snowstorm whirls in a circle.
A lightning bolt smiled-up on its white cheek:
it rejoices, Mount Whitney rejoices: —
the thunder among its silver cupolas, steely domes,
shivers like a rabbit in a sack…
Mount Whitney rejoices, Mojave, it rejoices! —
It’s snowing, it’s snowing!
And mists disperse across the world.

Mojave,
I see the sea in days of storm, in nights of fog.
The sea attacks ships of all the world,
ripping their sails and breaking
their masts against the storm-wind’s knees.
The raw, unbridled power is beautiful and wondrous, — righteous!
And I, a ship as all ships, move blindly
along undetermined paths, —
I look into the sea’s grey eyes and have no fear,
have no fear!

But you, Mojave, throw me into fright:
the muteness on your grey lips and the depression on your stony face
will, at some time, cry out volcanically, wild and unexpectedly.
And skies, like straw-strewn roofs, will burst aflame above me,
and beneath my tread — the earth will burst apart,
like the bursting of a swollen abscess.
You throw a fright upon me,
Mojave,
You throw a fright upon me!
