Los Angeles Toy District: Isaac Larian - MGA vs. Mattel
Isaac Larian’s Bratz dolls had become so successful that Bratz held forty percent of the fashion- doll market. These numbers greatly worried Mattel, which held the other sixty percent of the market. Larian offered Mattel two options: Mattel could either buy out Larian’s company for one billion dollars, or they could sue Larian’s company for five hundred million dollars. Mattel chose to sue MGA, claiming that one of the Bratz creators was working for Mattel during the same time period in which he designed the Bratz dolls. However, Mattel had not taken Larian’s fighting spirit into account. Larian’s past hardships in Iran and in America shaped his extraordinary persistence and determination. Larian’s tough-mindedness saw him through several years of legal conflict with Mattel and ultimately assisted him in winning the lawsuit in 2011.
