Los Angeles Fashion District: The Founding Fabrics of Bobak Roofian

Bobak Roofian came to the United States in 1979 with his brothers and sisters, while his father stayed behind in Iran at the time due to the revolution, and joined them two years later. Coming to America with no English background was a bit of a struggle, and it took him a few years to fully pick up the new language and adjust. He attended Taft High School in the San Fernando Valley, which is a high school that many Iranian Jewish teenagers still attend today. When asked if he had any prior fashion experience back in Iran, he answered with “Zero, I started myself and never even went to fashion school.” However, Roofian had a knack for fashion and business naturally, and began to utilize his talents early on. During high school he started making sketches and designs, many of which were later used when his business was up and running. He first got into the fashion business in 1981 when his father started a clothing store in downtown Los Angeles, that carried dresses, jogging suits, and other clothing. He started working alongside his father as a buyer, and traveled to different states, purchasing clothes wholesale in bulk, breaking them down, and then reselling them in Los Angeles.
