Looking Beyond: Elizabeth Mossanen - Children with Special Needs

“Special needs” is a term in clinical diagnosis and functional development used to describe individuals who require assistance for disabilities that may be medical, mental, or psychological. Special needs children can have a wide variety of symptoms, ranging from emotional problems and mild learning disabilities to profound cognitive impairments and terminal illnesses. Although these children experience diverse medical, behavioral, developmental, learning and mental health problems, one common challenge they face is gaining acceptance within their extended family and within society. Children facing these difficulties often encounter many obstacles when adjusting to social life and school, and may require assistance to perform daily tasks and activities.

Many service organizations have been formed to help children with special needs live rich and fulfilling lives. Looking Beyond works to fundraise and provide financial support for these organizations in order to make a positive impact on the lives of as many children and families as possible. In addition to fundraising, they seek to promote awareness, create opportunities, inspire, and overcome preconceived barriers.

Looking Beyond employs a unique method of selecting specific organizations to support. Interested organizations must first submit a proposal to Looking Beyond. Looking Beyond executive board members review the many proposals and decide which organizations would benefit more from their support. Looking Beyond is proud to say that they have been able to provide support, in one way or another, to almost all of the organizations who have sent in a proposal.
