Elat Market: Why is it Significant in our Community Today?
One major takeaway from this market is the sense of unity among all the customers and employees. As co-owners Rahim Golbari and Kevin Novinbakht both mentioned, Elat Market has taught the non-Persian and the non-Jewish community that Persian Jews are united together and they support one another. The Persian Jewish customers and employees respect one another and are friendlier to one another. Jonny Yomtoubian, a former employee of Elat Market, commented on how he felt the unity, due to the fact that he was an Iranian Jew working in an Iranian Jewish market, with Iranian Jewish customers. He was able to speak Farsi with them, and there was always some form of respect being reciprocated among everyone.
