30 Years After: Tabby Davoodi - How 30 Years After educates, engages, and empowers Iranian-American Jews in political affairs

30 Years After seeks to educate, engage, and empower Iranian-American Jews in political affairs by hosting numerous events. The 30 Years After organization enjoys inviting guest speakers such as policy makers, academics, diplomats, and journalists, to educate the Iranian-American Jewish community. 30 Years After makes such speakers accessible by bringing them to Los Angles so that Iranian American Jews have the opportunity to engage and interact with them.

Tabby states that 30 Years After puts a great emphasis on political and civic affairs. 30 Years After wants to inform community members that there is always time for these ambitious activities. To assure that individuals are able to engage in both political and civic affairs, 30 Years After holds a conference every two years. It is the organization’s biggest Los Angeles regional event, gathering over 1,000 young professionals and students to engage with city council members, senators, and political candidates. This tremendous event is put get together to discuss important matters while educating the community. The most recent conference, held in 2012, hosted a mayoral debate. By the end of the conference, everyone knew for whom and what they wanted to vote. Tabby expressed that seeing everyone walk away with knowledge and a sense of empowerment was very satisfying.

The team of volunteers that runs 30 Years After just recently hosted an event with the former CIA agent who helped rescue American diplomats from Tehran during the Iranian hostage crisis, Tony Mendez and his wife, Jonna Mendez. This inspiring and heart warming program allowed the Iranian American Jews of the Los Angeles community to engage and converse about their experiences of the fall of the Shah of Iran in 1980. Events such as this promote awareness and communal encouragement for individual voices to be heard. Tabby explained that in order to increase political affairs within the Iranian-American Jewish community, 30 Years After seeks to establish new programs, such as young leadership training, to expand on knowledge about the political landscape of Los Angeles.
