30 Years After: Tabby Davoodi - How Tabby got Iranian Jews to be involved in civic engagement

Since 2007, 30 Years After has successfully inspired Iranian Jews to be involved in civic engagement. Tabby explained that the first step was to get Iranian Jews excited about something new happening within the community. 30 Years After strived to be something in Los Angeles that had never existed before. Its initiating event was the Civic Action Conference, where over 1,200 members of the community attended. This conference allowed the organization to introduce new political aspects into the lives of Iranian Jews.

First and foremost, 30 Years After clearly communicated that civic action was at the community’s fingertips and it belonged to Iranian Jews as much as anyone else. Tabby stressed that civic engagement is an important team effort. It is an aspect of community in which each member can be engaged. In order to get members to participate, 30 Years After met their audience’s needs and made programs much more accessible to the community. They incorporated social and education aspects, reaching out to a broad range of individuals.

Partnering with over 70 different organizations, 30 Years After has expanded their community engagement. Through various organizations, 30 Years After has made civic action engagement accessible to the Iranian Jewish community by providing them with more opportunities to learn and act. Tabby said that 30 Years After is not interested in just talking about civic action engagement, but also encouraging community members take action and be involved in the political arena.
