30 Years After: Tabby Davoodi - How 30 Years After has changed the way people look at Iran and Iranian Jews

30 Years after has been an incredible factor in changing the ways people look at Iranian Jews. This non-profit voluntary organization has given a voice to the Iranian Jewish community that individuals never before sought to embrace. 30 Years After has brought life to the incredible stories behind the community by bringing back what was missing.

Tabby noted that the Iranian Jewish community has been the victim of stereotypes, creating negative impressions from outsiders. Outsiders get stuck in these stereotypes and forget to learn, acknowledge, and appreciate what the Iranian Jewish community endured during their life in Iran. To discourage negative behavior against Iranian Jews, 30 Years After has created “The Legacy Project” where “people use their iPhone to video family members telling stories of what life was like in the Jewish community in Iran.” It allows outsiders, as well as insiders, to go beyond the stereotypes and the initial impressions most people have about Iranian Jews. The Legacy Project aims to change point of views and create an open mindset by becoming engaged with Iranian Jews regardless of the negative connotations.

This project also strives to unite all Jewish communities, regardless of their cultural background. 30 Years After’s engagement allows various Jewish communities to see how varieties of Jewish communities, including Iranian Jews, live. This displays the commonalities and similarities among the different groups of people. It breaks down barriers, making the Jewish community more united and cohesive. The Legacy Project encourages Jewish communities to not look at Iranian Jews as “them,” but rather as “us.”
