The Oriental Institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences is pleased to announce a 2-day conference to be held in Prague in October 11-12, 2019. The conference comprises a series of presentations of cutting edge research by Japanologists from the USA, Europe, and Japan on the first day and a symposium on the second day, titled, "8 Years on: Scholars' Efforts to Reclaim Culture after the Great East Japan Earthquake." We hope that you will join us in the fruitful discussions and experience much intellectual energy during the two days.
The year 2020 is the 100th anniversary for Czech Republic-Japan relations. To celebrate our long relationship of peace and friendship, the Oriental Institute wishes to highlight a continuous growth of Japanese Studies in the Czech Republic and promote further intellectual exchange by inviting scholars to Prague. To start off, this year's presentations center on the role of scholars and scholarship in changing system of knowledge, ranging from the changing perceptions of illness, life, death, and the medical care environment, to shifting ideas of "imagined community" in the global age. On the second day, we invite 4 scholars who have made valuable contribution to various revitalization projects after the Great East Japan Earthquake. In the aftermath of the triple disaster, they worked closely with various local communities in order to reclaim what they lost and, slowly but steadily, helped them find ways to preserve their native traditions. Some of the scholarly activities are recorded in books and articles that were published afterward, but not all. The efforts of these scholars to help locals rediscover their precious roots often escape media attention, which follows more closely the government initiatives to promote their role in the "revitalization" (復興) of the Tōhoku region. We wish to acknowledge these efforts that have played a notable part in helping those who were affected by the disaster not only cope with the difficult conditions but also regain as much of normality in their life. Furthermore, we hope that this occasion will allow us to contemplate on the potential of scholars and knowledge that could be used effectively to enrich society's experiences.
We graciously acknowledge the generous support from the Toshiba International Foundation and the Strategy AV 21 from the Academy for making this event possible. This event is free and open to the public.
