1650: Christian Education as Civilization

1650: John Eliot establishes the first “praying town” to “convert and civilize” Native people in North America.  The town included rules of conduct (individual house-holding, no intimacy without marriage, no idleness and no long hair) and a translated version of the Bible.

Actions for Self-Determination:
Discussion Questions:
  • Read the rules of conduct outlined by John Eliot. How do they relate to your experience in school? Or to current laws?
  • Why would Eliot include a rule of conduct that each young man must set up and maintain their own home?
  • What is the history of the land that you live on?
Additional Resources:
  • Freeland Project. One section of the performance focuses on Emeryville. [Performance and workshops]
