1650: Christian Education as Civilization
1650: John Eliot establishes the first “praying town” to “convert and civilize” Native people in North America. The town included rules of conduct (individual house-holding, no intimacy without marriage, no idleness and no long hair) and a translated version of the Bible.

- 2001: As Black Friday begins to become the busiest shopping day of the year, protests begin at the site of an Ohlone Shellmound, now covered by the Bay Street mall in Emeryville, California.
