Scalar Class Project: Loss

Introduction to "To My Bones"

"To My Bones" is a work of interactive fiction designed "to raise awareness about eating disorders and beauty expectations." (Riverte). The narrative emphasizes how much one can lose due to such a deadly disease, not to mention the chance at loss of life one faces at the end of their story. As a result, Riverte and I warn that there are some graphic images that may be offensive to some viewers, however it is my opinion that these images are necessary as they truly emphasize the feeling that Reverte is trying to convey.

Riverte hopes that by the end of the story, the reader is told the dangers of leaving a disorder like this unchecked and infomrs the reader that around 165,000 people in the UK have an eating disorder and around 10% of them die due to the disease. ANAD, an organization fighting against eating disorders, says that in the US, this number is at least 30 million people. Riverte leaves a link to the NHS so that the reader can learn more and get help if they need it and also implores that they talk to a friend, family member or adult so that death isn't also the end of their story.

This work can be navigated by clicking on guiding arrows throughout the story, letting the reader know they should click on certain parts of the image in order to progress the story. Additionally, parts of the story without such arrows can be progressed via a right facing arrow button in the bottom right, a similar arrow points left to let the reader go back in the story to prior pages as well.
