The Digital PiranesiMain MenuAboutThe Digital Piranesi is a new, developing digital humanities project that aims to provide an enhanced digital edition of the works of Italian illustrator Giovanni Battista Piranesi (1720-1778).Pantheon, from Views of Rome"Veduta del Pantheon d'Aggripa," Vedute di Roma (Opere, vol 17)Colosseum, from Views of Rome"Veduta dell'anfiteatro Flavio, detto il Colosseo," Vedute di Roma (Opere, vol 17)Temple of Neptune, from City of Pesto"Vue du temple de Neptune," Ville de Paestum, Plate X (Opere, vol 15)Plan of Rome and the Campus Martius, from Views of Rome (Opere, vol 16)This map, “Pianta di Roma e del Campo Marzio,” serves as something of an advertisement to Piranesi’s other works. But it also resembles an elaborate table of contents for distinct publications. With numbered items in the central map, Piranesi refers viewers to the surrounding index, which includes over four hundred buildings and monuments. From this index, he then directs viewers to his other works, instructing them, often with abbreviated directions, such as “see Antichita romane” (“V. Aa. Re.” [Vedi Antichita Romane”]) or “see Views of Rome” (V. Ve. Ra. [Vedi Vedute di Roma]). Piranesi’s system of references can be quite complex—certain buildings, such as the Pantheon, are glossed in the index with short essays, and a few, such as Castel Sant’Angelo and Saint Mary of the Angels point to a series of images. Animating these varied printed references, which guide viewers both within one image and across multiple volumes of Piranesi’s works, is the goal of this hyperlinked map.On the construction of the Tomb of Caecilia Metella, from Antiquities of Rome"Modo, col quale furono alzati i grossi Travertini, e gli altri Marmi nel fabbricare il gran Sepolcro di Cecilie Metella, oggi detto Capo di Bove," Antichita romane, Vol 3, Plate LIII (Opere, vol 3)Castel Sant'Angelo, from Antiquities of Rome (vol 4)Opere vol 4Antichita Romane, vol 1 (Opere, vol 1)* * * * under construction * * * *Della Magnificenza ed Architettura De'Romani (Opere, vol. 7)* * * * under construction * * * *
