- Traditionally, a Bodhisattva is anyone who, motivated by great compassion, has generated a spontaneous wish to attain Buddhahood for the benefit of all sentient beings.
- In Buddhism, a Bodhisattva is one of the four sublime states a human can achieve in life, (the others being Arhat, Buddha, or Pratyekabuddha).
- A Bodhisattva will certainly attain Buddhahood,
but for a time, they renounce the blissful state of Nirvana, vowing to remain on earth in various reincarnations to help all living beings achieve salvation.
