Supporting Material: Case Study 2

The practice sets consist of 8 short videos (3 – 8 minutes) and 5 written case studies that demonstrate a variety of business processes. The videos were professionally shot and produced using working actors. All video processes are fully documented including scripts, written narratives and documented solutions (DFD’s, flowcharts and identification of appropriate controls). Case studies include written narratives and documented solutions. Full teaching notes are included for all materials.

The eight videos document four important processes; for each process there is a ‘good’ and ‘bad’ version. Filming takes place in process appropriate locations; office sequences are filmed in an office, goods handing sequences are filmed in a warehouse. Revenue cycle processes filmed are (1) processing a sales order and (2) picking and packing goods. Expenditure processes filmed are (1) billing the customer and (2) receiving and recording payments. The idea underlying filming a dual version of each process is that the ‘bad’ version provides an opportunity for students to analyse a visual depiction of a process and identify areas for improvements to controls and process design, the ‘good’ version illustrates best practice. Fully documented solutions are provided including a context diagram, logical and physical DFDs and a systems flowchart. A risk based analysis of the process is documented using typical risks encountered and their related control activities. In addition, teaching notes will describe the major learning points demonstrated in the case, and suggest techniques to ensure smooth classroom delivery of the materials.

The case studies include 2 simple process cases, 2 more challenging processes and 1 highly challenging integrated narrative. Each process is described in detail and is designed to be suitable for student to use to prepare documentation. As with the video cases fully documented solutions are provided along with a risk based analysis of the process and complete teaching notes.
