Double Robotics Teleconferencing Unit
By Mike Jeffries, University of Central Missouri
A few years back, I took a Segway tour in Chicago. What a great way to get around the city and see the sights! It won't be long before you and I will be able to take similar tours, or visit museums, or move from office to office at work -- VIRTUALLY!
Double Robotics released its new convergent technology, the Double Robotics Teleconferencing unit (Double) earlier this year. It is a Segway for the iPad allowing users to connect to the iPad from anywhere in the world and moving around just as if you were physically present.
The University of Central Missouri has acquired a demo unit for the purpose of allowing faculty, students, and staff to explore how this device will impact our private lives, the world of work and education. The Double has made an appearance in several classes, served as part of a panel discussion on accessibility, and attended a Distance Learning Week reception. It also has roamed the halls of the Student Union from time to time.
When asked what the device can be used for Mike Jeffries, Director of CentralNet in the Office of Technology for UCM, replies that it is up to the user to answer the question.

Like the iPad, the use of this device and others like it will develop over time and go places we can't even imagine today. For more information on the Double, visit the website or contact Mike Jeffries at jeffries@ucmo.edu.
