I didn't end up needing it for the course, but it is important to document it as a stepping stone toward my final project.
The What
This project was inspired by Butler’s comments on page 26 of Theatrical Machines where she discusses Balibar and Althusser’s ideas on mechanisms and the mechanical, but particularly her mention of Althusser’s interests in the condition “under which a subject breaks with a primary set of convictions or beliefs that have been maintained and naturalized the system of domination under capitalism” (Butler 26). The phrasing made me think about generative AI and the way large companies like Meta and Google constantly try to push it as something new and helpful, especially with regard to creative arts like writing and making music. I have always been very against this, but I decided to see if I could find a way to force a computer to make something creative.
Here is my brainstorm sheet for the project:
Writing the Song
Here is the spreadsheet I utilized to determine which notes would be played; the spreadsheet includes my options and the number(s) they were associated with and the numbers that were chosen by the computer.
The Takeaways
I didn't end up using AI or random numbers in my final project, but the knowledge of Garageband that I gained from this mini-project was invaluable. This project taught me how to use Garageband's internal instrument software, and essentially how to make music on it without pulling huge pieces of audio from other already-created pieces of music.
