But, his character has deepened as well. Jack’s engagement to Estefan has guided the central arc of the show for the past season and a half at least. The shift in attitudes has been reflected by the show Will & Grace and reinforced as exemplified by Joe Biden's famous remarks and the testimonials in "Looking at the Parenting Role". With this so, the newer episodes have been able to correct previous criticisms without fear of being cancelled. The sidekicks Karen and Jack were known for pushing boundaries in terms of accepted behavior, but they were written off as the rich drunk and the flamboyant bimbo respectively, even though they are objectively more interesting than Will and Grace.
Will and Grace have the same jobs since day one more or less. Jack has been through more than he can count.
His physical comedy also surpasses that of Messings, but the two together = gold. It's interesting that this scene works so well since he is usually paired with Mullaly's character. The new pairings demonstrate the willingness of the show to try new things based on new circumstances.
