Now hijacking Andersen’s story—only reversing the time line in which its plot unfolds—we will begin our story here by being as frank as possible but, obviously, far less innocent: Anitra Hamilton is an opportunist. There, I said it. Just like that. Five little words that everyone else is thinking but nobody dare say, especially about an artist. I mean, let’s face it, only Hamilton would take pleasure in retrofitting a WWII aerial bomb to make a candy-coloured, coin-operated kiddie-ride and then sit back and watch little kiddies ride it like a bucking bronco on a Sunday afternoon at the mall while their proud parents cheer them on….

As with The Emperor’s New Clothes, participants and audiences alike are implicated in the carefully orchestrated ruse. (Zerubavel, 48) In Anitra Hamilton’s work, no one is ever completely innocent.
