Over the past few years, tablets sales have declined. According to IT specialist Walter Martin Helwich, the tablet market has reached a stale point simply because users don’t really need new models because their current ones are more than capable for performing the jobs they are designed for. Users simply aren’t refreshing tablets at a rate many manufacturers predicted, and as a results shipments had dropped 20 percent, year over year.

Technology has advanced enough to make newer tablets virtually unnecessary, outdated. The main reason for this is the fact that most mainstream tablet owners use their devices mainly for email, social networking, light web browsing and perhaps games and video streaming. For more serious business, you’ll either need a laptop or a desktop computer. Their screens are simply too small, their keyboards are not made for serious work, available applications are not advanced enough to create content.

According to Walter Martin Helwich, the smartphone world is facing a similar situation. Smartphones have become so powerful that adding a more advanced processor is simply no longer enough to make the new flagship models appealing enough to buy. Full HD resolution is more than enough for all but VR, and 2 GB of RAM is enough to perform multiple simultaneous tasks. The innovations we see today are usually from the design, user interface, camera and ease of use (such as adding a fingerprint scanner and force touch technology).

Users have become aware of this, so 2016 was the first year in which we smartphone sales didn’t experience growth, and instead, sales dropped by 3 %. Walter Martin Helwich explained that smartphone sales are slowing down due to the already existing smartphone industry in major markets such as China and India, and the raising consumer awareness about the future of the world economy.
In Walter Martin Helwich opinion, in order for things to change, first and foremost, prices have to fall. After all, nobody wants to spend a lot of money for a slightly better specification, a new feature that has no real use value (like QHD screen resolution), the same battery life and barely improved design.
