Toku Shimomura Diary 18

Aug. 16
We gathered at the gate at 7:30 a.m. with “obento” (boxed lunch) given to us from Tamura san and Kazuo. We left the area at 9:30 a.m. We, the brethren of 500, departed to the hinterlands, locked in 16 old passenger train cars. We arrived in Portland at 2:30 p.m. After a one hour break we departed at 3:30 and arrived at The Dalles at 5:50. After a three minute stop our train continued toward the Cascades. It was difficult and hot for those two and a half hours before sunset! I felt more dead than alive. The nurses and soldiers checked on us hourly to see if we needed anything. Around 2:30 a.m. I fell into a doze after going crazy with suffering and fatigue.
